Virgin Media: New Network Expansion
Overview:
Virgin Media was undertaking a significant fibre expansion programme, extending fibre to customers’ homes. The network was to support the roll out of RFoG for the delivery of television, voice and internet connectivity.
Challenge:
- To provide a cost-effective solution for delivering fibre connectivity to end customer premises, using a PON Architecture
- To do so utilising existing client infrastructure where feasible
Solution:
The client provided a program of works detailing new build areas, each with an associated number of homes.
Entegro produced an HLD (High Level Design) including new ductwork routes, the location of associated street furniture and the cost for delivering the design. This design referenced the client’s internal infrastructure network maps and the HLD utilises mapping technologies, such as CAD and GIS. Once approved, Entegro progressed to the Detailed Design stage.
Detailed designs incorporated data from the HLD, as well as information gathered in a survey of the proposed route, and location of street furniture. If the route were to use existing infrastructure, then the integrity of the route is validated.
Wayleaves and permissions were gained from the local council and from any property management companies or individuals that may be impacted by the network. The LLD was submitted, along with detailed costs, customer permissions and wayleaves to the client’s system.
Result:
Entegro’s turn-key design and planning service delivered a Full end-to-end design which included HLD, LLD, utilisation of existing Client Infrastructure with required permissions/wayleaves, and detailed build costs to ensure a smooth delivery.
“We would see them as the Gold Standard in fibre”
